Oncology and Surgical Oncology
The study, treatment and surgical removal of cancerous tissues
Oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. This includes the study of cancer cells, tumors, and their growth, as well as the development of drugs and other treatments to fight cancer.
Oncological surgery is a type of medical treatment that involves using surgery to remove cancerous tumors. It is usually done as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include other forms of therapy. In many cases, surgery is the primary method of stopping the growth and spread of cancer.
Types of methods include, keep in mind that our primary objective is not educational
- Immunotherapy: Uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer.
- Chemotherapy: Involves the use of powerful drugs to destroy cancer cells.
- Radiation therapy: Uses high-energy radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells.
- Hormonal therapy: locks or removes hormones to stop or slow the growth of certain types of cancer.
- Targeted therapy: Targets specific proteins or genes that help cancer cells grow and spread.
- Interventional radiology: Uses imaging technology to guide the treatment of medical conditions with minimal invasion.
It may suffice to state that each treatment modality or combination thereof is tailored individually by the oncologist for each patient.
Please note, regular cancer screenings are recommended for individuals with a family history of cancer or other risk factors, as they can aid in detecting cancer during its early stages when treatment options are more effective.
How It Works
The process starts with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical history and diagnostic tests, followed by a determination of the most appropriate surgical approach, in often case a surgery might not be required.
As the treatment process begins, it may be subject to change based on the patient’s bodily response.
In the final stage, the medical team pays particular attention to providing adequate pain relief, minimizing potential side effects, preventing infections, and promoting the patient’s overall well-being through the use of supplementary therapies and rehabilitation.
Side effects
- Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy can include nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and weakened immune system.
- Surgery may cause pain, bleeding, infection, and damage to nearby organs or tissues.
