Neurosurgery

The treatment of nervous system conditions through surgical procedures

Neurosurgery is a branch of medicine that involves the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. It is performed by highly trained and specialized neurosurgeons who use advanced technology and techniques to provide precise and effective treatment.

Please note, patients with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure are at higher risk for complications.

How It Works

The process starts with a thorough evaluation and imaging studies to diagnose the patient’s condition, certain cases can’t be treated with neurosurgery and may require other treatment options.

During surgery, the patient is typically under general anesthesia, and the neurosurgeon uses specialized instruments and techniques to remove tumors, repair damaged blood vessels, or relieve pressure on the brain or spinal cord. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) may be used to help ensure the safety of the patient.

After surgery, the patient will be closely monitored in the hospital to prevent complications, such as bleeding or infection. Depending on the type of surgery, the patient may require physical therapy or other rehabilitation to regain function and strength. The recovery period can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s overall health.

Side effects

  • Some common side effects of neurosurgery include headaches, nausea, fatigue, and temporary numbness or weakness.
  • More serious side effects such as bleeding, infection, and stroke can occur but are rare.

Why undergo it in Israel Neurosurgery?

Israel is a global leader in neurosurgery, thanks to its highly skilled neurosurgeons, state-of-the-art medical technologies, and innovative research in the field.

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery reported that Israeli neurosurgeons achieve some of the best surgical outcomes worldwide, with a mere 1.5% mortality rate and 3.7% morbidity rate. In addition, Israel has a long-standing tradition of pioneering neurosurgical procedures, including the development of the first surgical treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

Recent studies have continued to demonstrate Israel’s excellence in the field of neurosurgery.

Recent studies continue to demonstrate Israel’s superiority in the field of neurosurgery. For example, a 2021 study published in Neurosurgical Focus evaluated a new minimally invasive technique for treating spinal cord tumors. The study found that the endoscopic spinal cord surgery technique was effective in removing tumors while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissues. The research was conducted at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

Another study, published in the Journal of Neuro-Oncology in 2020, explored the use of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) for treating brain tumors. The research discovered that MRgFUS is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors, with a high rate of tumor control and low incidence of adverse events. The study was carried out at the Sheba Medical Center.
