General Surgery

A broad surgical specialty treating a range of diseases and conditions

General surgery is a medical specialty that focuses on treating a wide range of conditions through surgical procedures, such as diseases of the gallbladder, gastrointestinal disorders, thyroid diseases, gynecological and urological problems, and many more.

How It Works

The process starts with a consultation with a surgeon to assess the patient’s condition and determine whether surgery is the best option. The surgeon will then perform a thorough examination and may order diagnostic tests such as x-rays, blood tests, ECG (Electrocardiogram) to get a clearer picture of the patient’s health. If it is determined that a surgery is required, the patient is placed under general anesthesia and the surgeon makes incisions to access the affected area. After the surgery, the patient is closely monitored and given appropriate pain medication to manage any discomfort.

Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery and the patient’s overall health.

Side effects

  • Some common side effects of general surgery include pain, bleeding, infection, blood clots, and reaction to anesthesia. However, these side effects are usually temporary and can be managed with medication or other treatments.

  • Patients who smoke, have pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease, or are overweight may be more prone to complication risks. Additionally, patients who are elderly or have weakened immune systems may be at higher risk of infection or slower healing.

  • It’s important to note that general surgery is generally considered safe, and the risks of complications can be minimized.

Many of its surgeons have been trained and practiced in some of the world’s most prestigious medical institutions, importing this expertise back upon return.

A recent study from 2020, conducted in Israel has evaluated the success rates of general surgeries in the country. The study found that the overall success rate for general surgeries in Israel to be 97.5%. The study also reported a low rate of complications following surgery, at only 3.3%. The high success rates were attributed to the use of advanced technology, including robotic surgery, and the implementation of personalized care plans. Furthermore, another recent study from 2020 conducted in Israel investigated the efficacy of a novel treatment for Parkinson’s disease. It found that a combination of ultrasound waves and microbubbles could improve motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The non-invasive treatment was found to be safe and effective, and the researchers suggest that it could provide an alternative to more invasive treatments such as deep brain stimulation.
